The Foundation is the creation of Bettie Ward and Patricia Pratchett. As founders they share a vision of a community where artists help shape the identity of our area by influencing how we look, sound and feel both to residents and visitors. In every sector of town the influence of artists should be evident in public art, galleries, school art programs, symphonic and conjunto music, private collections and community centers. That is to say, art is manifest; art is expected in everyday life. To make this happen, the individual artist must be assured continued opportunities and support.

What is à la carte?
On TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2011 the Artist Foundation of San Antonio will stage a one day only event at area restaurants called à la carte. Proceeds will assist the Artist Foundation to continue its mission “to enrich our artistic and economic fabric by providing monetary awards to individual artists, across diverse disciplines, thereby advancing their creative enterprise and the arts in our community”. Now celebrating its sixth consecutive year of awarding individual artist grants, the Artist Foundation has awarded $340,000 to 64 Bexar County artists in the past five years.
The Artist Foundation promotes participating restaurants as supporters of the San Antonio Arts Community
and assigns a Captain to each restaurant who is in charge of filling the restaurant with thirsty and hungry diners. In exchange for our efforts the restaurants pledge 20% – 100% of the food and beverage sales for the day to the Artist Foundation.
The money raised will help support our 2011–12 annual awards to local artists. Two hundred or more applications are received every year and through a juried professional process, the winners are selected. Every $5,000 artist award is reinvested in our local community. We are broadcasting to the world that art and artists are important in San Antonio. Great cities deserve great art and great art serves as a way to attract businesses and visitors. Artists are small business owners who employ others, rent venues, collect revenues and make our community richer. Art makes good business sense! And, à la carte is an excellent way to support our local arts community and promote economic development in our city.
Everyone wins! Restaurants, diners, and artists alike!
